Spirit & Truth Fellowship International needs many volunteers in order to accomplish the work we believe God has called us to do. What is a “volunteer”? Although you may know the basic definition, let us unpack this word so that if you decide to become a volunteer, you will know exactly what you are doing.  Ways to Volunteer | Volunteer Form

The first three letters remind us of the word “volition,” which means “the power or faculty of choosing; the will.” The dictionary definition of “volunteer” follows that line: “to perform, or offer to perform, a service of one's own free will.”

A real life example of something is always helpful, so to whom could we look to see the heart, motives, and behavior of a true volunteer? Jesus Christ is the ultimate, the consummate, the quintessential volunteer. Why? Because by his free will, he chose to walk the most arduous path ever set before any man. Consider the following verses:

Hebrews 12:1 (NIV)
(1) Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.
(2) Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
(3) Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.

As Jesus saw in the Old Testament the mission laid out for him, so the imperative verbs in Scripture, such as those above (throw off, run, fix our eyes, consider), invite us as his brethren to “volunteer,” as it were, to do those things. For Christians, it is “imperative” that we walk in the steps of our dear Lord.

Generally, a “volunteer” in today’s world is one who does his work without pay. But such is not the case for a Spirit & Truth Fellowship volunteer, because we know from God’s Word that the Lord Jesus will amply reward anyone who labors in love for him, both now and when he appears. As Paul says in 1 Corinthians 9:17a (NIV): “If I preach voluntarily, I have a reward…”

In the Hebrews 12:2 above, a key phrase is, “for the joy set before him.” What motivated Jesus to do what he did was not only his love for God and people, but also His Father’s promise of great reward and fathomless joy. We encourage you to search your heart for similar motivation and consider stepping up to serve in Spirit & Truth Fellowship International.
