Yesterday and today the main stories on the front page of my local newspaper were on Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO’s). There is a lot of controversy concerning this whole topic. Some people want my county to place a ban on all GMO’s, others are fighting against local farmers planting GMO corn, and the story today was about how even fish have been genetically modified, specifically Atlantic salmon. No matter what side of this controversy you fall on, I have found that what most people don’t realize is that the greatest genetic modification of organisms that ever took place happened thousands of years ago.

Adam’s sin caused him to forfeit his dominion over the earth to God’s archenemy, and that opened the door for a massive GMO campaign. The Bible tells us that thorns and thistles sprang up (Gen. 3:18). God never intended the rose to have thorns, the word “poison” to be associated with ivy, or for anything to be venomous. Not only were plants and animals affected, but mankind too is still reeling from the effects of Satan’s GMO program. This has been so drastic that it is much of what’s behind sickness, disease, and death.

Thankfully, God promises us that one day He will have the final word in The Day with His own GMO (“Godly Modified Organisms”) program.  When God restores things, the animals will be restored to the way He originally intended.

Isaiah 11:6-8
The wolf will live with the lamb, the leopard will lie down with the goat, the calf and the lion and the yearling together; and a little child will lead them. The cow will feed with the bear, their young will lie down together, and the lion will eat straw like the ox. The infant will play near the hole of the cobra, and the young child put his hand into the viper’s nest.

Ultimately God will make all things new.

Revelation 21:3-5 (NIV)
And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Now the dwelling of God is with men, and he will live with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God.  He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” He who was seated on the throne said, “I am making everything new!”

One of the benefits of fellowshipping with others is that it helps to keeps us grounded in the spiritual realities of life. As members of the Body of Christ we will be spending forever with one another, so we might as well get a jumpstart on things as we wait for God’s final GMO program.
