The other day the interior latch on my truck broke. I immediately knew there was something seriously wrong when I pushed it and heard a very distinctive…”click.” I pushed and pulled, back and forth as if it had had a sudden heart attack I was going to revive it with CPR. But alas, the latch was dead—completely and utterly gone. And the only way I could lock or unlock my door was (and still is) with the outside lock and key.

My mind tends to work in funny ways at times, so this lock problem caused me to reflect on how much of a role locks play in our lives. In the a past ten years I’ve moved a few times, and each time I do I seem to end up with more keys suspended from my key ring. Despite the fact I have no idea what many of them are for, I am reluctant to toss them away because of the fear that I just may need one of them when I least expect to.

Keys play a vital role in our lives. I have keys for my home, my shop, the barn, and my office—and even my employer’s office. There is a key to the mailbox, my tool boxes, and my wife’s jewelry box. Then there are the keys to multiple padlocks, gate locks, and gun locks, house safe and gun safes.  And of course I can’t forget about the car keys, truck keys, motorcycle keys, RV keys and utility trailer. As you can see, I attract keys like a rare earth magnet, which led me to muse, “Wouldn’t it be great if I could have one master key that would unlock everything?”

From a spiritual standpoint, this is exactly what Jesus is. He is the Master Key that unlocks the door to all of life, especially to everlasting life and complete access to the Father. He said, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” (John 14:6 NIV). Jesus is the Key to Life! Simply confess Him as your Lord and believe God raised him from the dead, and that key is in your hands (Romans 10:9,10). No cluttered key ring required!
